MI Global announced the captains for its MI Emirates and MI Cape Town teams on Friday. West Indies cricketer Kieron Pollard and Rashid Khan of Afghanistan will take over as captain for MI Emirates and MI Cape Town respectively. Mumbai Indians went global with the addition of teams in the South Africa and UAE T20 cricket leagues earlier this year. The new members of Mumbai Indians ‘One Family’, MI Emirates and MI Cape Town will debut in their inaugural seasons in January 2023, an official statement on Friday said.
Both teams have some of the best players from the world of global cricket and will seek to emulate the Mumbai Indians’ ethos and focus that has made it one of the most successful franchises in global cricket.
Kieron Pollard’s team will feature some of the best cricketing talent in the world: Dwayne Bravo, Nicholas Pooran, Trent Boult and Imran Tahir.
Rashid Khan’s team consists of a solid local South African core of Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, Rassie van der Dussen, along with Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone. The SA20 season starts on January 10, 2023 and MI Cape Town will play the opening match.
“We are delighted to announce our captains to our extended MI Global one family for the 2023 cricket season. We have a great mix of talent, experience and passion in both of our captains. I am confident that Polly and Rashid will take pass on the MI ethos and MI brand of cricket,” Akash Ambani said, according to the statement.
“Both will work with our outstanding coaching teams to infuse the MI spirit in MI Emirates and MI Cape Town and win the hearts of cricket fans in the UAE and South Africa,” added Akash Ambani.
Over the past 15 years, Mumbai Indians has emerged as the most consistent cricket franchise maintaining its number Uno position with seven titles including a record five trophies in IPL and two Champions League T20 titles.
