Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin dropped a bombshell on fans when he revealed that players in the national team are more ‘colleagues’ than friends. While Indian cricket enthusiasts tried to get over Ashwin’s feelings, young lead-off batsman Prithvi Shaw echoed the all-rounder’s sentiments, suggesting that the players barely open up to each other. Shaw, who has been out of favor in all formats when it comes to national team selection, revealed that while players talk to everyone, they are hardly open to each other about what’s going on in their lives.
In an interview with Cricbuzz, Shaw was asked which player he opens up to on the team about the tough points in his career. The Delhi Capitals star revealed that he has never opened up to anyone.
“Everyone talks to each other. But opening up… barely. At least I’ve never opened up to anyone. Yes, all mazaak-masti (fun and games) happens. But personal space used to be personal,” he said.
When asked about the person he reached out to to share his thoughts, Shaw chose his father and his coach as his go-to people.
“I keep talking to my dad. When it comes to cricket, I check with my coach, Prashant Shetty. I tell you, these days I don’t share my thoughts with people anymore. I keep it all inside,” he revealed.
When asked if he has stopped opening up to people because people have intruded into his life, the 23-year-old said he used to open up to people easily but not anymore.
“I say things frankly. Before, if someone would talk to me nicely, I would open up easily. Later on, I would find out that someone is saying the same things behind my back. Not once, this has happened several times. But it makes don’t mind me now, I understood by myself that this world works differently.
“I feel like the concept of best friend was invented by us. ‘He’s my best friend’. A ‘friend’ is fine, but there are no ‘best friends’ as such. I have friends too, I’m too a friend, but best friend – you won’t share everything with them. You don’t give them your PIN, do you? They say ‘best friend is the one who shares everything’. We can’t all share this, can we?” , he pointed out.
