Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir criticized Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli for his reaction to the controversial DRS decision during the ongoing Third Test against South Africa in Cape Town on Thursday. The former Indian lead-off batter said Kohli’s response was “exaggerated” and “really immature”. Indian players were visibly annoyed after a controversial decision from the Decision Review System (DRS) helped South African skipper Dean Elgar reverse his LBW decision in the ongoing fourth innings of the Cape Town Test.
The incident happened in the 21st over of the innings bowled by Ashwin. The spinner threw a flying pitch that drifted in, defeating Elgar on the inside rim and the ball hitting him right in front of the stumps, and on-field umpire Marais Erasmus raised his finger.
However, Elgar reconsidered the decision and replays showed the ball went over the stumps, so the decision was overturned.
The controversial call provoked mixed reactions from KL Rahul, skipper Virat Kohli and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. First, the mic caught Ashwin saying, “You should find better ways to win, SuperSport (South African broadcaster).”
Then Virat Kohli walked over to the stump mic and said, “Focus on your team too, not just the opponent, and try to catch people all the time.”
Finally, KL Rahul said, “The whole country is playing against XI guys.”
After the game ended, Gambhir told Star Sports: “This is really bad. What Kohli did, going near the stump mic and reacting like that, that’s really immature. This is not what you expect from a international captain, from an Indian captain. Then you can’t control the technology. Then you reacted the same way when there was a leg side chase, and Dean Elgar didn’t react that way either. During that Mayank Agarwal appeal, it looked out with the naked eye, but Elgar didn’t react that way,” he said.”
Gambhir added that he expects head coach Rahul Dravid to talk to Kohli on Thursday about his antics.
“Whatever you say things like he plays with his heart on his sleeve, this reaction was exaggerated and you can’t be a role model in this way. No aspiring cricketer would want to see this kind of reaction, especially from the Indian captain.
“Regardless of the result in this test match, this is not what you expect from a test captain who has led the team for so long. I hope Rahul Dravid will want to talk to him because the type of captain Dravid was he would have done.” never responded in this way,” Gambhir said.
