Former star of the Indian cricket team and member of the 1983 World Cup winning team, Roger Binny was named as the 36th president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday. His appointment was announced at the BCCI AGM in Mumbai. Binny replaces former India captain Sourav Ganguly. Binny, 67, was the only candidate to submit a nomination for the position of BCCI president.
The election of the next batch of office holders was only a formality, as they will all be elected unopposed.
Binny was chairman of the Karnataka State Cricket Association in his recent stint and will now leave his position in the state body. The medium pacer was one of the architects of India’s historic 1983 World Cup victory. In eight matches, he took 18 wickets, the highest in that edition of the prestigious tournament.
Binny was a member of the senior selection committee in the past when Sandeep Patil was chairman. When his son Stuart Binny’s name came up for discussion for selection in the Indian team, he would withdraw from the proceedings.
Earlier, Ganguly had many stakeholder meetings in New Delhi last week, according to a PTI report. The former India captain was keen to continue as BCCI chairman but was told there is no priority to give the chairman of the board a second term.

Sourav was offered the IPL presidency, but he politely declined the offer. His logic was that he could not accept becoming head of a subcommittee in BCCI after running the same institution. He had expressed an interest in the position to continue,” the BCCI source said. .
In Dhumal’s case, the decision makers waited for Ganguly to appeal for the IPL presidency and when he declined, they promoted the Himachal man, who, along with Secretary Shah, is known as the most efficient men in the last BCCI- cabinet.
