India opener Shubman Gill jumped to the second position, among batsmen, in the latest ICC ODI Players’ Rankings based on his performance in the ongoing Asia Cup. India are yet to taste defeat in the Asia Cup and much of their success has to do with fine contributions from batsmen, especially the top order of skipper Rohit Sharma, Gill and talisman Virat Kohli. Gill is not the only Indian to rise in the batsmen rankings with Kohli moving up two places to eighth and Rohit jumping two places to ninth in the latest rankings.
For the first time in over four and a half years, there are three Indians in the Top 10 of the latest batsmen rankings.
Gill has already made two half-centuries in the tournament, with a total of 154 runs.
His fine returns in the ongoing tournament have taken him to a career-best second place in the batsmen rankings. He follows Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who is currently at the top of the pile.
According to the ICC rankings, Gill has closed the gap on Babar significantly, with the margin now reduced to just 103 rating points.
The Pakistan captain tops the batting charts with 863 rating points, while Gill is currently second with 759 points.
You have to go back to early 2019 to find out the last time India had three players in the Top-10 rankings for batsmen.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan was in the Top-10 and then alongside Rohit and Kohli in January 2019.
Pakistan, who currently occupy the top spot in the ODI rankings along with Australia, have three of their players in the Top-10 of the batting charts.
However, Imam-ul-Haq has dropped one place to fifth and fellow opener Fakhar Zaman has dropped three places to 10th.
Currently in the form of his life, Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav has climbed the bowling charts and sits at the 7th spot, thanks to his nine wickets in the Asia Cup.
Star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has also moved up four places to sixth in the all-rounder rankings.
