Smriti Mandhana became the first player in the world to score 1000 runs in a calendar year in women's ODIs after the Indian vice-captain achieved the milestone during an ICC Women's World Cup 2025 match against Australia in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. Mandhana had already surpassed the legendary Belinda Clarke for most ODI runs in a single calendar year, needing just 18 runs to cross the 1000-run mark.
Against Australia, Mandhana started slowly before switching gears. She defeated Sophie Molineux with a four and a six in the eighth over to reach the milestone. Mandhana has been in great form in 2025, especially against the Australians in the recent ODI series. In three ODIs, ahead of the ongoing World Cup, Mandhana smashed two consecutive hundreds and a fifty. In 2025, she even scored four hundreds in the 50-over format.
Previously, the closest were all-rounder Deepti Sharma and former captain Mithali Raj, who had scored 787 and 783 runs respectively, both in 2017. Rawal could also pose a serious threat to Mandhana this year as she had also scored over 800 runs in 2025.
However, her show at the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup did not go as expected. The left-hander was dismissed just eight times in the tournament opener against Sri Lanka before scoring an identical 23 in India's next two matches against Pakistan and South Africa.
Earlier, Australian skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and chose to bowl first against India. Australia brought in spin all-rounder Sophie Molineux in place of Georgia Wareham in the crunch game, while India retained the same playing XI as in the previous match, which they lost to South Africa.
