The second ODI of the three-match series between India and New Zealand was abandoned in Hamilton on Sunday due to rain. After a seven-wicket defeat in the first game on Friday, the visitors looked to get on the winning track, but rain had other plans in store and the series are currently 1-0 in the Kiwis’ favour. The game was a stop-start affair and the match was eventually reduced to 29 overs per side. However, the final stoppage of the match when Team India were 89/1 in 12.5 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav (34*) and Shubman Gill (45*) in the fold.
In both ODIs Gill had good contact with the bat as he scored 50 and 45* runs respectively.
Speaking to Prime Video during the broadcast for the 2nd ODI, former India Coach Ravi Shastri shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill’s overall performance.
“His focus today was on the timing of the ball. Sometimes when you’re out of your depth you want to keep going by trying to hit the ball hard. He had good control of the ball with good footwork. It’s great to see him play. He has something royal. He is a quality player and he will be around for a long time (ten years),” said Shastri.
“He has a good work ethic, he trains hard, he is hungry and he loves this game. He will continue to play because he is well looked after, he is always grounded,” he added.
Heading into the game, the match was reduced to a 29 over game after an initial weather disturbance stopped play for nearly four hours with India 22-0 after 4.5 overs.
A further eight overs were bowled as play resumed before rain sent the players back to the pavilion and no further play could be played.
New Zealand lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning Friday’s opening game in Auckland by seven wickets. The final is Wednesday in Christchurch. The streaming for the match is available on Prime Video with coverage starting at 6am IST.
