Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday said he will hold a meeting with the bronze medal-winning Indian men's hockey team before September 10 to chalk out future plans in their quest to win the gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Mandaviya on Tuesday congratulated star keeper PR Sreejesh, defender Sanjay, Amit Rohidas and striker Abhishek after they returned from Paris on Tuesday morning. “You have done a great job, we didn't win the gold but we were very close and the way you have inspired after the semi-final loss is commendable,” Mandaviya said.
“But it is not the end of the road and I will sit with you on September 10 and chart a future course so that we return from Los Angeles with nothing less than gold. I will seek your views on how we should go about this and try to provide you with all possible support from the government.” The minister also said that he was happy with the performance of the Indian contingent even though they could not replicate the result of the previous edition.
In Tokyo, India won seven medals, including one gold, but in Paris the country managed to secure only six – five bronze and one silver.
However, the Indians missed out on seven medals, finishing fourth, something Mandaviya regretted.
“In Tokyo we won seven medals, but in Paris we won six. But the fact is that we missed out on another seven medals by finishing fourth, which is an honourable achievement,” he said.
Mandaviya had earlier congratulated the other members of the hockey team who returned early.
