While the India squad for Ireland series saw someone like Rahul Tripathi get his first national call-up, another quality player like Rahul Tewatia kept waiting to make the national squad. The all-rounder played a vital role for newcomers Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022, scoring 217 runs in 12 innings with a strike rate of 147.62. Shortly after India’s 17-man roster for the Ireland series was announced, Tewatia took to Twitter to say “expectations hurt (sic)”. However, former South African captain Graeme Smith believes he should focus on his game rather than social media.
“We know that he (Rahul Tewatia) has done well. There are some players in that squad who have done well. That’s the point, there’s so much competition for places. I’d say to him stay off Twitter , focus on your game, perform’. Next time the squad comes out, nobody can let you out because you kicked that door down,” Smith told Star Sports .
Smith hinted that Tewatia would not be in the Indian selection committee’s plans for the T20 World Championship, which starts in Australia on October 16.
“India has so many talented players. The selectors, Rahul (Dravid) and Rohit (Sharma), they will have an idea of what the majority of the squad will look like and who are the players competing for other squad positions, what is the balance “Remember that you’re playing in Australia, the conditions, the terrain, so that’s all got to go into your thinking, in terms of putting together your roster going to the World Cup,” the South African added.
