The Supreme Court said Thursday that it wants the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup to be held and that the matter should be resolved amicably between the authorities involved. The court’s comment came after it was announced that a meeting will be held tonight to resolve the matter. FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is scheduled for October 2022 in India. A bench headed by Judge DY Chandrachud said, “We want the World Cup to be held.” The bank also opined about not opening the case for now.
The court’s comment came after senior lawyer Gopal Sankaranarayanan was informed of today’s meeting with FIFA. “The CoA (Committee of Trustees) and the Ministry will meet FIFA. We are trying to sort this out,” he told the court.
The court then heard the case on August 17.
The court heard the case regarding AIFF’s new constitution. Earlier, the Supreme Court appointed a three-member committee of trustees to oversee the day-to-day affairs of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Recently, the court-appointed Committee of Trustees (CoA) had requested the initiation of contempt proceedings against former AIFF chairman Praful Patel.
In the plea for contempt, the CoA argued that after the highest court on Aug. 3 established the consensus between the various parties to first hold the elections to the AIFF in a time-limited manner and then finalize the Constitution, the State Societies attempted to do the same, but indirectly.
“The evidence accompanying this contempt petition would show that Mr Praful Patel, who had been ousted as chairman of the AIFF, has consistently abused his position as a member of FIFA’s Council to launch a campaign under the organize state associations to undermine the various steps taken by this Court for the betterment of football, including involving football players in governance and governance,” the CoA said in the plea.
“As recently as on 06.08.2022, the defenders before this Court have participated on behalf of the state associations in meetings led by Mr Patel, where he implicitly admits that letters have been received threatening to suspend FIFA-AFC in order to inform them. “help”, and that the government is convinced to ask for a review of the order and fears the worst. It is clear that the government has been misled by the state associations, as well as the FIFA-AFC, which is ignorant of the duplicity role played by Mr. Patel,” the plea read.
The court-appointed committee called for measures (as was done in the BCCI case) to prevent those endangering Indian football from interfering with the court’s oversight of the process.
The CoA has filed contempt proceedings against several people, including Patel for:
promoted
blatant disobedience to SC orders of May 18, 2022 and August 3, 2022, and orders that Patel be immediately barred from participating in and holding any football-related positions, including without limitation positions in FIFA and AFC.
According to the petition on May 23, 2022, the deposed president of AIFF, Praful Patel, sent a letter to FIFA “in his capacity as a member of the FIFA Council” suggesting that the appointment of the CoA by this Hon’ble Court would be interpreted by FIFA and AFC as “undue third-party influence” and that India could be suspended from both bodies and also jeopardize the Asian Cup qualifiers in June 2022 and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled for October 2022 bring.
