Defending champion Novak Djokovic reached the third round of Wimbledon for the 16th time on Wednesday when potential semi-final opponent Casper Ruud crashed. Top-class Djokovic lost to 79th seeded Thanasi Kokkinakis from Australia 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 and will face Serbian compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic for a last-16 place. Ruud, third seeded and second at the French Open, was eliminated by Ugo Humbert in 112th place, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
“I am very happy with my performance. I started very well, solid from the back of the field,” said Djokovic, who is looking for Pete Sampras as a seven-time Wimbledon champion.
“I’ve made him work for every point and make him work on the field,” added the 20-time big winner.
Kokkinakis had compared Djokovic to a “brick wall” before the match. “It was a one-way street. I got chopped today,” the 26-year-old Australian said after his Center Court torment.
Kontaveit, Muguruza, Raducanu from
In the women’s race, Anett Kontaveit, runner-up, lost 6-4, 6-0 to Germany’s Julie Niemeier, while the Estonian had to endure another Grand Slam to quickly forget.
Kontaveit has made it to the quarterfinals of a major only once in 29 attempts.
Ninth seed and 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza also got out in her delayed first round clash, losing 6-4, 6-0 to Belgian Greet Minnen.
US Open champion Emma Raducanu crashed out of Wimbledon on Wednesday and lost her second round match against Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-3 to the disappointment of the British home crowd.
The 10th seed, who suffered a side injury in the run-up to the tournament, was broken five times in the match by her French opponent, who is in the world ranking 55.
Lesia Tsurenko came out on top in three sets against Ukrainian compatriot Anhelina Kalinina and made it to the third round for the second time. Tsurenko, ranked 101, proudly wore a ribbon in the colors of Ukraine on her shirt.
“It was a big field. Two Ukrainian players, but a lot of people were watching us. We felt great support,” said Tsurenko after her 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. “Today we got a driver on the way from the hotel to the club,” she added. “She has taken two people from Ukraine into her house.
“I love it when people help Ukrainians so much.”
