Indian team management, led by Rahul Dravid, has asked KL Rahul to “be ready to keep wickets and bat in middle order” in upcoming ODIs, the Indian vice-captain revealed on Sunday. Rahul has kept wickets sporadically in 2021 and batted in mid-range and in the first ODI against Bangladesh he put on the big gloves apart from scoring 73 runs.
This was after Rishabh Pant was rested from the ODI series on the advice of the medical team.
Rahul dropped an aerial catch from Player of the Match Mehidy Hasan Miraj which could have ensured victory for India instead of one wicket defeat.
“We haven’t played many ODIs in the last 8-9 months, but if you look at 2020-21 I kept wickets and batted at numbers 4 and 5. This is the role the team asked me to be ready. for in white-ball cricket as I have done it before,” Rahul replied curtly when asked about Pant’s absence.
However, Rahul, who is part of the team management as vice-captain, did not clarify whether Pant had a rest due to workload management or due to some glitch.
“When it comes to Rishabh, I’m not sure if I’m being honest, I found out today that he will be released. Whatever the reasons, the medical team will be in a better situation to answer those questions.
Rahul did not think that batters or bowlers should be held responsible for this defeat.
“That’s right with cricket. You have to expect the unexpected. As long as cricket is played things like this keep happening. They fought really well to the end and the couple dropped catches and Mehidy’s innings.” He was personally pleased after scoring runs off a tricky wicket.
“One of those days where it seemed like I timed the ball better (than others). The shots I chose luckily went to the limit, every option I chose went my way,” he said.
“Innings like that give you joy as a batsman because you are challenged and you raise your hand when the team demands it. Ideally we should have made 40 more runs. I felt like 230-240 if I had batted to the end or even if I could have played.” beaten to 40th left.”
