Delhi SG Pipers will take on Odisha Warriors on Sunday to get the ball rolling in the Women's Hockey India League (WHIL) in Ranchi. The matches will take place at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Hockey Stadium, which has hosted top events in the world such as the FIH Olympic Qualifiers and the Women's Asian Champions Trophy. Navneet Kaur, captain of Delhi SG Pipers said, “We are very excited that the Women's HIL is finally starting and we (Delhi SG Pipers) get to play the first match. “Compared to other teams, I believe we are quite young. There will be a lot to learn from them and they will have a lot to learn as the competition progresses. We have prepared very well and are taking it match by match.” Captain of the Odisha Warriors team Neha Goyal highlighted the financial benefits of the competition.
“HIL brings great financial stability to players, especially those who are not yet part of the Indian team. This league will definitely inspire more youngsters to see hockey as a career option and realize their dreams,” Neha said.
Artists from Jharkhand will highlight their heritage through cultural performances during the opening ceremony.
