Wimbledon will allow female players to wear dark-colored underpants from next year’s tournament to ease fears of playing while on their period, the All England Club announced on Thursday. There has been a call for Wimbledon to make an exception to their traditional rules requiring players to all wear white.
Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton said: “We are committed to supporting the players and listening to their feedback on how to best perform.
“I am pleased to confirm that, after consultation with players and representatives of various interest groups, the management committee has taken the decision to update the white dress rule at Wimbledon. The Championships have the option to wear colored underpants if desired. We hope this rule change will help players focus purely on their performance by removing a potential source of anxiety.”
The decision follows the example of a series of women’s football teams, including Manchester City, to stop playing in white shorts.
