Pakistan ended their 18-match losing streak with an eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the Women’s ODI World Cup here on Monday. Spinner Nida Dar returned with impressive numbers of four for 10 to help Pakistan limit the West Indies to 89 for seven after opting to field in the limited rain match, which was reduced to 20-over-a- side affair due to the damp outfield at Seddon Park.
In addition to Dar, Omaima Sohail (1/12), Fatima Sana (1/14) and Nashra Sandhu (1/24) each took a wicket while Pakistan produced an inspired bowling effort.
Opener Deandra Dottin (27) scored the highest score for the West Indies, while Stafanie Taylor (18) and Afy Fletcher (12 not out) were the other two Caribbean batters to score in double digits.
In the 90’s chase, Pakistan, who have lost all four games so far to be bottom of the eight-team standings, lost opener Sidra Ameen (8) in sixth over with their scorecard 22.
Muneeba Ali (37 out of 43) and skipper Bismah Maroof then split 35 runs for the second wicket before the first left, with Pakistan needing 31 more runs off 46 balls. Muneeba hit five limits during her knock.
But Maroof (20 not out) played wisely without taking any risks and in the company of Sohail (22 not out) bagged 33 unbeaten runs for the third wicket to romp home with seven balls left.
While the win would be a huge morale boost for Pakistan ahead of their remaining two league games, the defeat jeopardized West Indies’ hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
Despite the loss, the West Indies still occupy third place with six points from six games. Pakistan is still in last place.
The West Indies will meet South Africa in their last league game on March 24, while Pakistan will face England (March 24) and New Zealand (March 26) in their last two games.
