Veteran from India, Wriddhiman Saha, will join the Tripura team as a player-cum-mentor, an official said on Tuesday. Saha is a 40-test veteran and already holds the NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). “We have had talks with Saha and he has agreed to play for the state. He will also act as a mentor to the senior team to motivate the players,” Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) joint secretary Kishore Das told me. , to PTI. TCA expects Saha, a wicketkeeper batter, to sign an agreement by July 15, he said.
Players would have benefited immensely if Saha joined the team, given his vast experience in international cricket and the domestic circuit, Das said.
“It is not yet certain whether he will become the captain of the team. That will be decided later,” said the official.
He is expected to play Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Tripura.
Saha, who will turn 38 in October, made the decision to leave Bengal after the CAB’s joint secretary, Debabrata ‘Debu’ Das, alleged the veteran goalkeeper was making excuses to skip domestic matches for the state.
The furious Saha wanted an unreserved apology from Das, which he did not get and when the official was sent to England as administrative manager of the Indian team, it broke the proverbial camel back. He had said that he would never hold a grudge against Bengal and be ready to serve again in the future.
