Tech giant Apple is reportedly preparing to develop a successor to its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. However, according to a recent update from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the highly anticipated device is unlikely to hit the market before 2026. Originally unveiled at the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the Vision Pro was introduced as a niche product aimed primarily at developers. Speculation is rife about its potential successor, with indications of a launch within the next few years.
Launch the timeline and features
In the latest edition of hisTurn on In the newsletter, Gurman emphasized that Apple's 2025 roadmap does not include new Vision Pro hardware. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that the new model will be unveiled this year, with an expected market launch in 2026.
Gurman's previous insights suggest the Vision Pro 2 could debut “between fall 2025 and spring 2026.” It's expected to feature Apple's next-generation M5 chipset, a step up from the current M2 system-on-chip that powers the existing Vision Pro model.
While the design of the successor is expected to remain largely consistent with the current model, the most significant upgrades will likely be under the hood. Improvements can focus on improving the “human-machine user interface” of the device, which remains a significant challenge in the field of head-mounted displays.
Affordable Vision Pro model in development
In addition to the Vision Pro 2, Apple is reportedly working on a more affordable version of the headset. Gurman noted that this budget-friendly model is a priority for the tech giant, but its launch may not happen until after 2027, based on previous reports.
To achieve a lower price, the cheaper version could make several compromises, including using more economical materials, less advanced chips and downsized XR screens. Additionally, the cost-saving measures could extend to the elimination of the EyeSight feature, which allows users to display their eyes on the external screen of the current Vision Pro.
