Apple is reportedly making significant progress toward developing a groundbreaking in-house modem, which is poised to reshape its product lineup. According toBloomberg's Mark Gurmanthe new modem, codenamed “Sinope”, will replace the Qualcomm chips currently used in iPhones, promising improved energy efficiency and a more compact design.
The Sinope modem will likely debut in 2025 and is expected to first appear in the iPhone SE, followed by a model codenamed “D23,” which is expected to be the thinnest iPhone yet, the report said. It is predicted that this reduction in component size will pave the way for larger batteries, improved camera systems and an overall sleeker design.
Apple's move towards its own modem technology would have far-reaching consequences that extend beyond smartphones. Reports indicate that the new component could enable innovative designs including foldable iPhones, which would mark Apple's entry into a segment currently led by competing manufacturers. While no timeline has been officially announced, the inclusion of this modem could support the development of such foldable devices, potentially redefining the market.
Another groundbreaking application of this modem is in Apple's Mac series. The company is reportedly exploring mobile connectivity for its laptops, which will allow users to access the internet outside of Wi-Fi networks. However, Macs with cellular communications are not expected before 2026, as Apple is expected to use a second-generation modem for this purpose, which promises greater speed and efficiency.
Additionally, Apple plans to introduce this modem in lower-priced iPads as early as next year, with Pro models expected to adopt the innovation in 2026. Interestingly, while the modem could eventually be used in a wide range of Apple devices, there are currently no confirmed plans for it to be used in Apple Watch models.
If these reports are true, Apple's new modem could not only enable sleeker and more efficient devices, but also revolutionize its product ecosystem, cementing Apple's position as an innovation leader.
