If you, like most people, are tired of Google's default search engine (which has dominated the global market for over two decades), there's now an alternative in town from OpenAI. The Sam Altman-led company recently introduced a web search feature in ChatGPT, officially making it one of the search engines much like Bing (run by OpenAI's largest backer Microsoft).
Although it's been about two weeks since OpenAI rolled out its AI-powered search engine, not many people know that you can also ditch Google and other search engines completely in favor of ChatGPT Search.
How do you set ChatGPT as your default search engine?
ChatGPT can be set as your default search engine in all Chromium-based browsers, which means they should have the option to download extensions from the Chrome web store. This means that you can set ChatGPT as your default search engine not only in Google Chrome, but also in other popular browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Brave and Opera.
To set ChatGPT as your default search engine, go to Google Chrome and search for the ChatGPT search extension or simply click this link and continue adding the extension. Make sure the extension has been added to your browser by going to the Extensions tab.
Please note that some browsers may automatically disable the ChatGPT search extension and it is advisable to add the extension to the favorites box to continue using ChatGPT as the default search engine.
Why can't I use ChatGPT's search function?
The ChatGPT search functionality is currently only available to the company's Plus and Team subscribers with access to Enterprise and Education customers to follow in the coming weeks. While OpenAI hasn't committed to a release date yet, the company says access to free users will be available soon.
ChatGPT Search is an evolved version of SearchGPT, a prototype AI Search experience teased by OpenAI earlier this year. So if you had signed up for the SearchGPT waitlist, ChatGPT Search would be available to you even though you don't have a subscription.
