OpenAI has made its ChatGPT Go subscription free in India starting today. OpenAI's new offering extends to all existing users of the chatbot, along with new users.
However, a persistent question among ChatGPT users is what happens if they already have a ChatGPT Go subscription; are they still eligible for the free plan? We now have official clarification from OpenAI on these concerns.
What happens if you already have a ChatGPT Go subscription?
OpenAI says that users who have already purchased a ChatGPT Go subscription via web or Android via the Google Play Store do not need to cancel their subscription to take advantage of the promotional offer.
The AI startup says it can automatically redeem the ChatGPT Go promotion for users later this week.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT Go subscribers who purchased it through Apple's App Store should check out the redemption options by clicking this link.
“We will automatically push your next billing date back 12 months next week. No action is required on your part. Please note that your subscription must be in good standing to qualify for automatic redemption. If you have existing discounts on your account, we will replace them with the promotion,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
But how exactly does OpenAI determine whether an account is in 'good standing'? The company says it is reviewing the account to see if there are any missed or declined payments.
“If your account is not in good standing, you will not be able to redeem the promotion until your billing period ends and you resubscribe after adding a valid payment method,” says OpenAI.
What is the ChatGPT Go subscription?
The ChatGPT Go plan is the company's cheapest plan, which was launched earlier this year at a price of ₹399 for 12 months. With the package, users get ten times higher access to the company's GPT-5 model, along with ten times higher image generation compared to the free plan.
ChatGPT users will automatically receive a pop-up from OpenAI to upgrade their free account to the ChatGPT Go tier at no cost. Users have to enter their UPI or card details to subscribe to the pack. You will be charged automatically after one year when the subscription comes up for renewal.
Meanwhile, Reliance Jio has also announced that it will offer a free Google AI Pro subscription for 1.5 years, while Airtel will offer a free Perplexity Pro subscription for one year.
