Bengaluru: Tata Consultancy Services Ltd CEO K. Krithivasan has said that Generative AI (Gen AI) will not lead to a decline in workforce.
“We may have to change the way we train people, but this will not lead to a reduction in recruitment,” Krithivasan said in an interview with CNBC TV-18. “The types of people we hire may also change, but we don't expect to hire fewer people,” he added.
The CEO of TCS said that generative AI increases the productivity of the programming experts. However, designing, thinking critically about the planning processes and creating a superior user experience would not be done away with.
“It's not that the fundamental training is going away, but the type of training you do should be about critical thinking, strategic planning or promoting greater creativity. Those are the areas where you need more skills,” he said.
TCS has started newer recruitments and continues to recalibrate lateral recruitments with a focus on leveraging the capacity built up over the years, he said recently.
Staying true to the trend of the broader IT sector, the Mumbai-based IT Services company ended December 2023 with 6,03,305 employees, down 5,680 employees from the quarter ended September 2023.
When Krithivasan brought employees back to work, Krithivasan said employees working from home missed in-person collaboration. “While Zoom and (Microsoft) teams are very efficient media, we all know the importance of informal conversations,” Krithivasan said.
Reiterating the importance of TCS's values, as he had also stated in the company's FY23 annual report, Krithivasan said that 30-40% of employees who have joined in the last two to three years do not even attend were unable to take office and therefore could not adopt the company's values. .
