Google has started rolling out a software update for its Pixel 4a smartphones, aiming to improve battery performance stability. The update, which will be delivered to all devices running Android 13 from January 8, introduces new battery management features. However, for certain devices this may result in reduced battery capacity and slower charging speeds.
According to Google's support page for the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program, this update is intended to stabilize battery performance over time. Affected devices may see, as Google describes them, reduced battery life between charges, changes in the battery level indicator, and a decrease in charging performance after installing the update.
To address the potential inconvenience to users, Google is offering compensation options. Owners of affected Pixel 4a devices can opt for a free battery replacement or financial compensation. Customers can claim a one-off payment of $50 (approximately £40) or a $100 credit (approximately £80) towards a new Pixel phone purchased through Google's online store.
For those opting for battery replacement, services are available at authorized walk-in repair centers in India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Singapore. Mail-in repair services are also offered exclusively to customers in the United States. It is important to note that battery replacement is subject to availability and is only possible at eligible locations.
Google states that the update will be downloaded and installed automatically, after which the device will restart for the changes to take effect. Affected Pixel 4a owners must apply for one of the reconciliation options by January 8.
This marks the final software update for the Pixel 4a, which reached the end of its software cycle with the Android 13 update. While it addresses long-term battery performance, the update highlights the challenges faced by older devices and Google's plans to balance stability with user satisfaction.
