(Bloomberg) – The summaries of Google AI have responded to a few internet searches on abortion by echoing organizations of organizations that try to prevent women from ending their pregnancies, according to a campaign for accountability report.
In a series of searches carried out in three states that require women to have an ultrasound before they undergo an abortion – Arizona, Florida and Wisconsin – the non -profit group discovered that the AI overviews of Google frame as a way for women to make informed choices and quotaries from the Summaries.
Crisis -pregnancy centers, a species non -medical organization with a mission to encourage women to continue their unwanted pregnancies, have invested heavily in shaping information available online about abortion to achieve women while trying to obtain the procedure, and the enormously popular products of Google have emerged as an important forum.
In a statement, Alphabet Inc. ownership said Google that the AI overviews “have been designed to put information of high quality of multiple perspectives on topics where there are different points of view.”
“We give people many ways to get more context about the sites they see during searching and advertisements, including prominent disclosure of advertisements that make clear whether or not advertisers offer abortion services,” the company said. Google has also removed advertisements that violate the policy.
Shortly after the American Supreme Court had terminated the legally protected right to an abortion in 2022, Bloomberg discovered that Crisis -Gridership Centers regularly appeared under the top results for searches on the “abortion clinic” in Google Maps. Google also failed to properly label advertisements from the groups on the main search page.
The prevalence of crisis pregnancy centers in AI overviews shows how the groups extend their reach to a product that Google has framed as the future of searching.
“In all three states, researchers documented examples of Google who trusted overwhelming on medically unhealthy CPC talk points to set up his top of searches,” AI overviews “,” The Campaign for Accountability, a non -party -bound business and government watch dog organization, wrote in its report.
Health experts say that pre-abortion ultrasounds are usually not medically necessary and contribute to the cost and planning burden of a time-sensitive procedure. For crisis pregnancy centers, however, the scans are an opportunity to convince women to continue their pregnancies.
Melissa Fowler, Chief Program Officer of the National Abortus Federation, said that the information -hotline of the organization has heard from people who have received inaccurate ultrasound -results from Crisis pregnancy centers that give patients the false impression that they have more time to access than they actually do -or that time is up. “Anyway, these inaccurate ultrasounds and misleading tactics often make patients confused and feel as if they have no options. The ultrasound in these centers often do not meet the state requirements for waiting times, which further delays patients.”
In response to a search for a user in Florida, Google's AI overviews suggested having performed a pre-abortion ultrasound in a crisis pregnancy center in Orlando, according to the report. Crisis pregnancy centers do not offer references for abortions, according to the report, which means that any ultrasound that is carried out in the center will probably not count for the requirement of the state. Women have six weeks to obtain abortions in Florida.
For another search, the AI overviews of Google Pre-Abortion ultrasound ultrasound as a way to determine the viability of a pregnancy: “This can help prevent unnecessary abortions.” This reflects a common point of discussion of crisis pregnancy centers, which implies that women who will eventually experience a miscarriage can prevent the time and costs of having an abortion, according to the campaign for accountability.
The organization also investigated the Google Search advertisements that are intended for women looking for pre-abortion ultrasound in the three states. The group discovered that the majority of those advertisements came from crisis pregnancy centers that offered scans that would ultimately not meet the requirements of the States, an attempt to intercept women and to take care of the procedure.
For example, in response to a question about a pre-abortion of a hypothetical 20-year-old woman who lived in Madison, Wisconsin, Google has an advertisement for Care Net Pregnancy Center of Milwaukee, according to the report.
The website advertised the free ultrasound services of the crisis pregnancy center and accurately stated that the law in Wisconsin requires that patients have an ultrasound before an abortion. But the group “fails to say that their declared refusal to refer to abortions means that none of this free ultrasound could ever be counted on a state requirement,” said the campaign for accountability.
Similar advertisements were served for researchers who simulate abortion seekers in Florida and Arizona. “All these examples seem to violate the wrong representation of Google,” said the non -profit.
