Apple said Wednesday that its iPhone 12 model has been certified by multiple international bodies as compliant with global radiation standards, after a French watchdog ordered the company to stop selling the device because it violates European exposure limits.
The ANFR radiation watchdog told Apple on Tuesday to halt sales of iPhone 12s in France after tests showed that the phone’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) – a measure of the rate of radio frequency energy absorbed by the body a device – was higher than legally permitted.
The ANFR said it would send agents to Apple stores and other distributors to check if the model was no longer sold.
It said it expected Apple to “use all available resources to end the non-compliance”, and that failure to act would result in a recall of iPhone 12s already sold to consumers.
Apple said ANFR has provided multiple laboratory results from Apple and independent third parties showing compliance with all applicable SAR regulations and standards around the world.
It said it disputed the results of the AFNR review and would continue to work with the agency to demonstrate compliance.
The AFNR said accredited laboratories determined the body’s absorption of electromagnetic energy at 5.74 watts per kilogram during tests that simulated when the phone was held in the hand or kept in a pocket. The European standard is a specific absorption power of 4.0 watts per kilogram.
ANFR added that the tests showed that the phone met so-called body SAR standards when in a jacket pocket or bag.
