The long-awaited iPhone 17 lineup, which is expected to include the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, may not have any major changes to the Dynamic Island, according to a new claim from a market analyst. This report contradicts previous speculation suggesting that Apple would reduce the size of the feature, which currently houses the front camera and sensors for features like Face ID.
TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate predictions regarding Apple products, recently stated on X that the size of the dynamic island would remain “largely unchanged” in the iPhone 17 series. However, Kuo did not provide any additional details about the new range of devices.
Notably, this challenges a July 2024 prediction by Haitong International Tech Research's Jeff Pu, who suggested the iPhone 17 Pro Max would use advanced “Metalens” technology for its proximity sensor. Such a move is expected to facilitate a more compact design for the dynamic island on Apple's premium models.
As a reminder, Apple introduced the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro series, replacing the traditional display notch on previous models. While the feature has been widely praised for its functionality, hopes for a sleeker iteration appear to be premature.
Reports indicate that Apple may instead focus on a complete redesign in future iPhones, potentially moving the components underneath the display. Until then, users may have to wait at least another year for a smaller dynamic island.
Interestingly, the upcoming iPhone SE 4 is said to adopt the dynamic island design, moving away from the display notch seen in the current SE model. Leaked details suggest that the budget-friendly device will mirror the design of the iPhone 14 while incorporating improved camera, processor and display upgrades.
For now, it looks like Apple enthusiasts can expect incremental improvements rather than revolutionary design changes in the upcoming iPhone 17 series.
