Spider-Man 2 just got a new gameplay trailer during the PlayStation State of Play event, held late Thursday, with new details about the exploration, side quests and new technology. Game director Bryan Intihar began by comparing the open-world experience to the 2018 prequel, noting how the map has nearly doubled in size and expanded beyond the East River to include the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. To compensate for the distance, both Spider-Men – Peter Parker and Miles Morales – are equipped with deployable Web Wings that allow them to quickly glide through the city. These can indeed be used in conjunction with web swinging by alternating the two for more momentum.
As previously reported, players can instantly switch seamlessly between Spider-Men – functionality enabled by the PS5’s SSD – no matter how far into the open world they are. That loading speed also applies to the fast travel system, where new districts are unlocked based on the number of side activities you complete in that zone. In Spider-Man 2, our heroes’ masks feature new AR technology that reveals world activities through holographic icons in your field of view. All nearby tasks and NPC requests can be tracked using the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man app, which appears at the bottom right of the screen. While most tasks can be completed by Spider-Man – indicated by the small face icons on the phone screen – some are reserved for a ‘specific hero’.
For example, Miles could be asked to appear at Brooklyn Visions Academy, his current place of learning, which seems investigible to some extent. Likewise, Midtown High’s football field, where we saw Peter hanging out with Harry Osborn in an older trailer, will be available to explore – at least to some extent. Intihar explained that side quests will be largely represented through “visual clues,” such as Talon drones in the sky leading to Kraven the Hunter’s story and floating green symbols hinting at Mysterio’s presence. Such interactions would eventually lead to confrontations with Spider-Man’s rogue’s gallery of villains, not limited to the bulky Venom.
Exploration also rewards you with new combat and gadget upgrades, in addition to unlocking new Spider suits. Intihar claims that this sequel will feature over 65 suits from comic books, movies, and some original designs. There are 200 in total when you consider the Suit Styles system, which allows you to unlock alternate colors for your selected outfit. Additionally, if you purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition of Spider-Man 2, you’ll get an additional ten exclusive suits – five for each Spidey – created in collaboration with artists from various media. This edition costs Rs. 5,599 / $79.99.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 comes to PS5 on October 20.
