New Delhi, July 4 (PTI) Telecom -Regulator Trai started on Friday with a consultation document to explore a framework to have the use of foreign Sims exhibited alone.
A SIM card refers to the identity module for subscribers – requires a chip to connect a device with a telecom network.
The supervisor has published a advice book on the “Regulatory Framework for the sale of SIM/ESIM maps of foreign telecom providers for use in M2M/IoT devices that are intended for export purposes” according to a reference sought by the Department of Telecommunications based on industry application.
“In this context, an advisory book about” the regulatory framework for the sale of SIM/ESIM maps of the foreign telecom providers for use in M2M/IoT devices that are intended for export purposes “placed on Trai's website,” said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in a statement.
Although the current rule makes it possible to sell the SIM of foreign telecom operators for use by customers traveling abroad, the industry has pointed to limitations and asked some clarity, especially about authorization to sell SIM for devices that are only intended for export.
The current rule requires the activation of SIM 48 hours before customers travel abroad and deactivation within 24 hours after landing in India.
The industry has said that in the case of devices of machine-to-machine and IoT (Internet of Things), the SIM should be activated for a short period for a short period for sampling, demo or prototype tests of the M2M/ IoT devices to guarantee their full functionality before export.
As part of the process, Trai asks for comments about whether only telecom license holders are allowed to sell SIM for export purposes or it can be a bona fide Indian entity that must take a “no objection certificate” for purchasing and selling such Sims or Esim's.
Trai has resolved a deadline of August 1 for comments and August 18 for counter -commentary about the advisory book.
