This weekend I have… 11 minutes, and I’m fried.
‘The last open microphone at the end of the world’
When to watch?: Now, on YouTube or HBO Max.
In this alt-comedy discount, Megan Koester presents a kind of drive-in open mic, where comics stay in their car and she sits in a warehouse, occasionally responding through a megaphone. As with real open mics, the jokes on offer here are a grab bag, but unlike real open mics this rushes through 16 different strips delivering one or two jokes as quickly as possible; the highlight is the show’s Covid compliance officer doing his own set. If internet poisoning has distorted your taste to the point that you appreciate lists of esoteric good tweets, check this out.
… half an hour, and I like quirkiness.
‘Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock’
When to watch: Arrives Friday, on Apple TV+.
The revival mania continues with this return to Fraggle Rock, which is thankfully true to the quirky, wistful original. The main gang is back; Gear the dog is back; Uncle Traveling Matt is back; the Doozers; the theme song; the lessons on the nature of wisdom, on ecological stewardship, reciprocity, the pursuit of self-acceptance, and the wonders of emotions are all back. The biggest change is a shift to a sharper visual style. Four seasons of the original “Fraggle Rock” are also streaming on Apple TV+, as well as “Fraggle Rock: Rock On!”, a series of short films released in Spring 2020.
… 40 minutes, and I love people.
‘True story with Ed & Randall’
When to watch: Now, on Peacock.
Ed Helms and Randall Park present this sweet show that feels like a cross between “This American Life” and “Drunk History”. In each episode, Helms and Park sit down with someone with a wild story: a man who snuck to the Super Bowl, a young Muslim woman who loved pro wrestling as a child and channeled that into running for president of the school. The show cuts between the studio interview and wacky, heightened reenactments, and it’s all very endearing. If you want something warm but not unbearable schlockola, or if you’re looking for something you like but don’t feel compelled to binge, check this out.
