“Of course we appreciate the spotlight in those moments, but then, you know, you have today and I get nine million death threats and everything,” she told reporters after Monday’s game.
“It’s very polarizing, very fast from one extreme to the other.
“At this point in my career I would say I’m used to it. It’s now for me, like I said, to find a way to, okay, get those big wins, but then be able to do it a little bit support bit. Yeah, it’s not easy to say the least.”
Rogers’ compatriot Sloane Stephens said on Saturday that she had received more than 2,000 messages of “abuse and anger” after her third-round loss to Angelique Kerber in the US Open.
Stephens shared some of the messages she said she had received on Instagram, including threats of physical assault.
“I wish social media didn’t exist,” Rogers said when asked about Stephens’ Instagram posts. “Here we are. It’s a big part of marketing now, we have contracts, we have to post certain things.
“I don’t know, you could probably browse my profile right now, I’m probably a fat pig and, you know, words I can’t say right now. But, I mean, it is what it is. You don’t try take to heart, and it’s the unfortunate side of every sport and what we do.
“I’m also very thankful that I got that chance at Ashe. Not everyone has even had the chance to play there, and I’ve played there three times this week. It’s just trying to keep it in perspective. You know , just focus on the important stuff, no comments from people in their mom’s basement.
“You know, yeah, it’s a real shame and some things come to your head sometimes.”
In a statement sent to DailyExpertNews on Monday, Instagram said it has checked the accounts Stephens flagged and has removed all accounts that violate its policies.
“The racial abuse against Sloane Stephens after the US Open is abhorrent,” said a spokesperson for the Facebook company, owner of Instagram. “Nobody should be racially abusive anywhere, and posting on Instagram is against our rules.
“In addition to our work to remove comments and accounts that repeatedly break our rules, there are security features available, including comment filters and message monitoring, which can mean no one needs to see this kind of abuse.
“Nothing will solve this challenge overnight, but we are committed to working to protect our community from abuse.”
