One person was killed Thursday in a shooting at a church in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, police said.
“We have been informed that three people were shot during the incident at the church,” said Captain Shane Ware of the Vestavia Hills Police Department. “Unfortunately, one of the people shot has died.”
The shooting was reported at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills at approximately 6:22 PM CT (7:22 PM ET).
Ware said the two injured victims were hospitalized but did not provide details about their condition. A person is in custody, but Ware has not identified the suspect.
According to the church calendar, an event called the “Boomers Potluck” was planned at the same time the shooting took place.
Ware said another update is scheduled for around 9 p.m. local time.
