A criminal gang that orchestrated a Rs 2.70 crore theft from a jewelery store in Churu in Rajasthan was busted after artificial intelligence was used to generate photographs of the thieves.
Churu Superintendent of Police Jai Yadav said victim Chhaganlal Soni's jewelery shop at Uttarada market was robbed of cash, gold and silver on November 30. The masked thieves climbed from an empty lot behind the store onto the store's roof and broke the stair door. and went inside.
While CCTV footage of the theft and the area surrounding the store was retrieved, it was difficult to establish the identity of the thieves as they wore masks on their faces and gloves to avoid fingerprints. Furthermore, the car used by the gang also had a fake license plate.
Police searched around 1,000 CCTV cameras in Ratangarh, Rajaldesar, Parsneu, Bidasar, Jaswantgarh bypass and Ladnun. They also took pictures of car numbers and masked photos using artificial intelligence and then added more than 200 photos.
Taking pictures of the thieves helped the police in arresting three suspects namely Bhagirath Bawari, Ajay Singh Bawari and Yadaram Bawari, all residents of Uttar Pradesh. Two suspects have yet to be arrested.
Yadav said the gang had also stolen 4 kg of gold in West Bengal earlier.
