Telangana BJP lawmaker T Raja Singh has refused to take oath by AIMIM's Akbaruddin Owaisi, who was appointed by the protem speaker of the state Assembly. Mr Singh, who won the Assembly elections from Goshamahal last month, said none of the BJP legislators would take oath.
In a video message, he said he would never take oath “as long as he lives” in front of AIMIM. He said he would only take the oath after a full-term speaker had been appointed.
“Can I take oath in the presence of someone (Akbaruddin Owaisi) who has made anti-Hindu comments in the past,” he asked.
Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy said his party was against Mr Owaisi's appointment as it is against tradition of appointing senior MLAs as Protem chairman.
“BJP MLAs will boycott taking oath before this Protem chairman. Our MLAs will take oath after a Speaker is appointed. We will never ally with such a party (AIMIM). We will go to the governor about this,” he told reporters.
Raja Singh had also refused to take oath in 2018 as the then appointed Protem chairman was also from the AIMIM.
Mr Owaisi was expected to take oath as Protem chairman on Saturday and administer the oath of office to the elected MLAs today.
Mr Singh alleged that Congress' Revanth Reddy, the new Telangana Chief Minister, is afraid of the AIMIM like his predecessor K Chandrashekar Rao and hence allowed Mr Owaisi to become the Protem chairman.
The senior-most MLA in the assembly will be the Protem speaker as per protocol. Mr. Owaisi was elected to the assembly (including the united Andhra assembly) for the sixth time from Chandrayangutta constituency.
However, Mr Singh alleged that there are many senior MLAs who could have become the Protem chairman but the new Chief Minister tried to appease the minorities and AIMIM leaders.
