After several days of testifying that Depp’s drug and alcohol use would turn him into a “monster” who would be violent toward her, a lawyer for Depp questioned Heard emphatically about her own drug use, including scheduling time for “drugs” on the 2015 the couple’s wedding.
“Who was the real monster in this relationship, Mrs. Heard?” Depp’s attorney Camille Vasquez asked Tuesday.
“It’s half of Johnny. It’s not all of Johnny. The other half of him is amazing and beautiful and the man I loved,” Heard testified.
Depp accuses Heard of defaming him in a 2018 op-ed for the Washington Post. In the piece, published about two years after their divorce, Heard described himself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” Although Depp is not mentioned in the article, he claims it has cost him lucrative acting roles.
Heard has filed a counterclaim for $100 million.
On the witness stand, Heard has described her relationship with Depp as both violent and romantic, stating that his alleged violence towards her is related to his drug and alcohol use.
“It was always the guy who did drugs and beat me up. Yeah, that’s always been the monster,” Heard testified.
Depp has previously testified that he has never “beaten a woman” in his life.
Pointing to Heard’s own drug use, Vasquez introduced a transcribed schedule of Depp and Heard’s wedding on the actor’s private island in the Bahamas, including time for “dance and drugs and music” after a rehearsal dinner.
“So you planned to do drugs at your wedding with someone you describe as a drug addict?” said Vasquez.
“To be honest, we would have separate parties,” Heard said. “This is clearly a draft that was sent before many changes were made.”
Messages between Heard and Depp
Vasquez also played recordings of Heard and Depp arguing, read excerpts from a “love diary” Heard filled with messages to Depp, and read texts between the former couple.
In an April 2016 journal, Heard wrote, “I’m sorry I could go mad. I’m sorry I hurt you. None of this is meant as an excuse to hurt you, because the truth is that there are nothing is. There is never a reason good enough to hurt you.”
Heard wrote to a doctor in a March 2015 text, “I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to change.”
Heard testified that she was referring to the former couple’s relationship.
“I really wanted to end the relationship I was in. But I didn’t feel like I had the power to leave,” Heard testified. “I knew I had a very toxic relationship with Johnny. And I knew I had to change that.”
In recordings, Heard told Depp that he was a “sold out” and a “joke”. Depp called her “the most spoiled f****** brat.”
“I called him horrible ugly things as you can hear. We spoke to each other in a horrible way,” admitted Heard.
2009 incident
Heard was asked about her arrest in 2009 on charges of domestic violence with a previous partner, for which she was ultimately not charged.
Heard denied assaulting the woman, her former partner, at the Seattle Tacoma Airport in 2009, an incident that was widely reported shortly after Heard was granted a restraining order against Depp in 2016.
“So Mr. Depp isn’t the only roommate who attacked you, is she, Mrs. Heard?” asked Depp’s attorney, Camille Vasquez.
“I’ve never attacked Mr. Depp or anyone else I’ve had a romantic relationship with. Ever,” Heard replied.
Heard that alleged stories of the arrest had been planted by Depp’s PR team at the time, calling it a “smear campaign”.
Perry Cooper, a spokesperson for the Port of Seattle, confirmed to DailyExpertNews that Heard had been arrested at Seattle Tacoma Airport on September 14, 2009 for a fourth-degree assault on domestic violence, but that the prosecution declined to press charges. against Heard in the case.
Cooper said a request to remove the record of Heard’s arrest was granted. DailyExpertNews also filed a Freedom of Information Law request for the arrest, but was told by the Public Register of the Port of Seattle Police that it had “no responsive documents for Amber Heard.”
DailyExpertNews has contacted the person Heard was accused of assaulting. A spokesperson for Heard had no comment.
“The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has not received a full report beyond the information about the initial appearance, but from the initial information police sent us, there appeared to be no evidence of a domestic violence crime outside of reasonable doubt,” Casey McNerthney, a spokesman for the King County Prosecutor, told DailyExpertNews in a statement on Tuesday. “This does not appear to be a matter of police work, rather that we have no evidence to prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Under re-examination, Heard’s attorney Elaine Bredehoft had told her as the woman she allegedly assaulted the allegation was false and Heard said “of course she did.”
With those questions, Heard closed her time on the stand on Tuesday afternoon.
Judge Penney Azcarate also ruled Tuesday that the case can go ahead, in response to a previously filed request by Heard’s lawyers to suspend the entire case on multiple grounds.
