It's exam time again. The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance (NEET-UG) retest for 1,563 candidates will be conducted again today after the testing agency withdrew the grace marks awarded to them to make up for the time loss.
Here are the key points in this big story:
The retest for the medical entrance exam will be conducted at seven centres, six of which are new. “While all other exam centers have changed, the one in Chandigarh, where only two candidates will appear, will remain the same,” a senior NTA official said.
Officials from the National Testing Agency, the examination body and the Ministry of Education will also be present at these centers to ensure smooth conduct of the exam, the official said.
On June 13, the testing agency informed the Supreme Court that the scorecards of 1,563 candidates who had been awarded “grace marks” for the NEET-UG 2024 exam would be canceled and these candidates would have the option to appear for the exam again on June 23 to appear. the results of which are announced before June 30, or waive the compensatory figures for the loss of time.
The exam was first administered on May 5 and its results were announced on June 4, ahead of the scheduled announcement date of June 14. Protests were held over irregularities and paper leaks as the results showed that as many as 67 students had topped the exam with a perfect score of 720.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had on Thursday ruled out cancellation of NEET, saying he cannot jeopardize the careers of lakhs of students who rightfully cleared the exam due to “isolated incidents of malpractice”.
The Center on Saturday replaced National Testing Agency director general Subodh Singh and set up a seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan to review the functioning of the agency and recommend exam reforms.
The government has also operationalized a stringent law aimed at curbing malpractices and irregularities in competitive examinations. A maximum jail term of ten years and a fine of up to Rs 1 crore for violators are some of the harsh measures under the law.
Amid an escalating row over the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance (NEET)-Undergraduate exam 2024, the Health Ministry has decided to postpone the NEET-Post Graduate exams that were scheduled to be held today.
“Taking into account the recent incidents of allegations regarding the integrity of certain competitive examinations, the Ministry of Health has decided to conduct a thorough assessment of the robustness of the processes of the NEET-PG entrance examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations for medical students,” the ministry said.
The Congress held protests across the country on Friday over alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam, with Rahul Gandhi saying he would raise the issue in Parliament and the opposition would put pressure on the government to ensure justice for students.
