Bangladesh started their first Test match against India in Chennai with a bang but were in trouble by the end of the opening day. The visitors reduced the Rohit Sharma-led team to 34 for 3 and later 144 for 6 but a superb partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket rescued the hosts from trouble. Bangladesh were put on the back foot as India finished on 339 for 6 on Thursday, with Ashwin unbeaten on 102 and Jadeja scoring 86 not out.
Although Bangladesh have lost their grip on the match, there must be a bigger problem for the side as they fell 10 overs short of the target despite a half-hour extension in the bowling. This could mean that the side will be penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
This only adds to their woes, as Bangladesh were stripped of three World Test Championship points and fined 15 per cent of the match fee last month after falling three overs short in their first Test match against Pakistan.
Talking about their ongoing match against India, Bangladesh could bowl only 80 overs in the entire day. They bowled 23 overs in the first session, 25 in the second and 32 in the last session on Day 1.
“Bangladesh will have bowled less than 80 overs despite the extra half hour added. It has to be unacceptable,” cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

According to Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions: “A team shall have one (1) World Test Championship match point deducted from its points total for each Penalty Over it incurs during the Round Stage.”
