Washington:
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation accused North Korea on Wednesday to be behind the theft of $ 1.5 billion in digital assets last week, the largest crypto robbery in history.
“(Noord -Korea) was responsible for the theft of around $ 1.5 billion USD in virtual assets of cryptocurrency exchange, Bybit,” the FBI said in an announcement of public service.
The agency said that a group called Trainertraitor, also known as the Lazarus group, was behind the theft.
It said that they “continued quickly and some of the stolen assets converted into Bitcoin and other virtual assets spread over thousands of addresses on multiple block chains”.
“It is expected that these assets will be further washed and eventually converted into Fiat -Vuvuura,” the FBI added.
Lazarus Group became known ten years ago when it was accused of hacking Sony Pictures as a revenge for “The Interview”, a film that the Noord -Korean leader Kim Jong un mocked.
North Korea's Cyber War program dates from at least the mid-nineties.
Since then it has grown to a 6000-person cyber war unit that is known as Bureau 121 that operates from different countries, according to an American military report from 2020.
