British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been fined by police for not wearing a seatbelt while riding in a car.
Sunak, who was filming a social media clip at the time of the offence, received a “conditional offer of a fixed sentence” from Lancashire Constabulary.
A Downing Street spokesperson said Friday that the British leader will “obviously comply” with the sentence. “The Prime Minister fully accepts that this was a mistake,” the spokesman added.
Sunak’s spokesperson had said earlier on Thursday that Sunak apologized for a “slight error of judgement” while filming an Instagram video in northern England, urging people to wear their seatbelts.
Lancashire Police said: “You will be aware that there is a video circulating on social media showing a person not wearing a seatbelt while sitting as a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire.
“After investigating this case, today (Friday, January 20) we issued a conditional offer of a fixed sentence to a 42-year-old man from London.”
In the UK, failing to wear a seatbelt when one is available can lead to a fine of up to £500 unless you fall under a valid exemption.
This is the second time that the police have fined Sunak while holding public office. In August 2022, Sunak, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson were fined by police for partying that broke the lockdown at UK government buildings.
