With the dates of the Pakistan Super League likely to clash with the Indian Premier League 2025 next year, the franchise owners of PSL have asked the country's cricket board to give them clarity on the availability of foreign players for the league. A well-informed source close to the PSL franchisees said they have written a letter to new PSL managing director Salman Naseer, asking him to convene a meeting soon to address their concerns.
“The owners want the PCB to give them clarity on which players would be available for the PSL if the IPL is held simultaneously and also on the broadcast schedules,” the source told PTI.
“The owners are concerned because of the lack of clarity. The England and Wales Cricket Board and some other boards are talking about restrictions on their players playing in leagues, so they want clarity ahead of the PSL player draw.”
PSL is normally held in February-March but next year's edition has been shifted to April-May as Pakistan will host the Champions Trophy 2025 in February-March. On the other hand, next year's IPL is expected to take place from March to May will take place.
The source said there are fears that many of the top foreign players may not be available after the IPL mega auction in Saudi Arabia this weekend.
He also said that the franchise owners felt that due to some pressing matters, including the hosting of the Champions Trophy early next year, the PCB may put the issues related to the next PSL edition on the back burner.
“Some franchisees have asked Salman Naseer to follow through on the promise to set up an independent PSL secretariat, which has not happened in a decade.”
After the tenth edition of PSL next year, all franchises and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will have to review their agreements and financial obligations. The PCB may also add more teams to the current six-team PSL.
