The House Democratic Whip’s daughter, Katherine Clark, was arrested Saturday and charged with assault after meeting police at a protest in Boston, according to a press release from the Boston Police Department.
Riley Dowell, 23, was found by police tagging the Parkman Bandstand monument “NO COP CITY” and “ACAB.” “ACAB” is commonly known as an acronym for the anti-police slogan “All Cops Are Bastards.”
As police tried to arrest Dowell, protesters surrounded officers and, according to the press release, one of them was punched in the face, bleeding. The release referred to Dowell by her birth name.
Clark confirmed the release in a tweet Sunday.
“Last night my daughter was arrested in Boston, Massachusetts. I love Riley, and this is a very difficult time in the cycle of joys and pains of parenting,” Clark wrote. “This will be judged by the justice system and I have faith in that process.”
Clark began serving as a minority whip in the 118th session of Congress after House Democrats elevated her to the position.
Clark is only the second woman after former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to hold one of two major party leaders in Congress.
Previously, the congressman served in the lead role of assistant speaker.
