Sujan Mukherjee, a pitch curator in Eden Gardens, received a lot of recoil after denying Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Captain Ajinkya Rahane's request to prepare a spider -friendly track. Following KKR's great loss for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the opening match of IPL 2025, Rahane expressed his frustration that was used for the competition and hoped to see Spin-friendly track in the Eden Gardens. “We would like to see that the field helped the spin bowlers, but again, this wicket was coverage in the last one and a half days. Both spinners we have, the quality they have, they can bowl in any kind of wicket and I am sure they are also confident,” Rahane was quoted after the game.
Speaking with Revsportz, Mukherjee said he would not make any changes and even gave the example of the RCB spinners.
“According to the IPL rules and regulations, franchises have no control over the field. Since I took the lead (as Eden curator), the fields have been like this. It had been like this in the past. Things have not changed now and it will not be changed in the future,” said Mukherjee Revportzz.
“Their (RCB) Spinners took four wickets between them. What did the KKR spinners do? Krunal Pandya got three wickets. Suyash Sharma pointed the ball to Castle Andre Russell.”
Mukherjee, who has confronted a lot of anti -aircraft weather on his comments, has returned from his earlier comments and said that he never denied a request from KKR.
“No official or player asked for the pitch requirement for the first game. A coach at the time of the exercise asked me about the behavior of the field. I said Ghumega Bhi Aur Accha Chalega (the field will play and it will be good to hit),” Mukherjee told Sport Tak.
Mukherjee also stated that he has good relationships with everyone at KKR, and added that the field was prepared according to the guidelines of the BCCI.
“I have never denied anything to KKR. We have long been in good relationships. I have drawn up the field according to the BCCI guidelines. Those who accuse me know nothing,” he added.
Former New -Zealand Pacer Simon Doull had beaten Mukherjee before KKR's request, adding that the franchise should go away from the Eden Gardens if they don't get the field to their liking.
“If he (the curator) does not have eight about what the home team wants … I mean, they pay the stadium costs, then they will pay for what is going on in the IPL, but if he still does not pay attention to what the home team wants, just go the franchise to somewhere else.”
“It is his job not to give an opinion about the game. That is not what he paid for,” Doull told Cricbuzz
After losing RCB in their opening match, KKR registered their first victory of the season, on the road, against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati.
