Police in the Gujarat city of Surat on Tuesday arrested a man allegedly posing as a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and giving interviews to local media alleging that he had designed the lander module for the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission , an official mission. said.
A complaint was filed against the accused, Mitul Trivedi, after he was seen giving interviews after the Vikram lander successfully soft-landed on Aug. 23 and claimed to have designed Chandrayaan-3’s lander module, the official said.
Trivedi allegedly posed as the “assistant chairman” of ISRO’s “Ancient Science Applications Department” and even prepared a fake letter of appointment dated February 26, 2022, he said.
“Due investigations have revealed that the man was in no way connected to ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission and had made false claims that he was an ISRO operative,” the police said in a statement.
He even produced a bogus letter saying he was the “space research member” for ISRO’s next project called “Mercury in Space.”
He spread false reports about ISRO despite not contributing to the ambitious project, damaging the institution’s reputation, the statement said.
The Surat City Crime Department has filed an FIR against the accused under sections 419 (impersonation fraud), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for the purpose of fraud) and 471 (using forgery as genuine document) of the Indian penal code.
