New Delhi:
The Big Three of Maharashtra's BJP-led alliance i.e. Mahayuti, Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar met Amit Shah in Delhi last night. While it is almost certain that Mr Fadnavis will become Prime Minister, there are major sticking points.
These are the most important developments:
An alliance meeting in Mumbai to iron out the details has reportedly been cancelled. This also applies to the Shiv Sena rally of outgoing Prime Minister Eknath Shinde.
Sources say Eknath Shinde is on his way to his village in Satara and the meetings will take place after his return. His sudden plan led to speculation that he was dissatisfied with government formation talks.
Eknath Shinde's announcement that the chief minister's decision was left to the BJP paved the way for a smooth change at the top. Devendra Fadnavis, who led the BJP to a record victory, will become chief minister for the third time, sources said.
After the meeting with Mr Shah, Mr Shinde called the discussions “good and positive”. He said the decision on the next chief minister of Maharashtra will be taken at another meeting of the Mahayuti coalition in the state capital. He also told reporters that he would not create an obstacle in government formation in the state and would abide by the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr Shah.
There is consensus on the posts of chief ministers and deputy ministers, sources said, but the allocation of some ministerial posts remains unresolved.
Sources told NDTV that the current formula of one chief minister with two deputies is likely to continue. But Mr Shinde is reportedly not keen on taking on a deputy role. Sanjay Shirsat, an MLA and spokesperson of the Shiv Sena, told PTI, “He is unlikely to be a deputy chief minister. It does not suit someone who has already served as chief minister.”
The BJP is likely to retain the Home portfolio and Ajit Pawar's NCP may retain the Finance portfolio. Eknath Shinde's Sena is likely to get the urban development and public works departments.
While the BJP is likely to get 22 cabinet berths, the Shiv Sena and NCP will get 12 and 9 portfolios respectively, sources said.
According to sources, the oath ceremony is likely to take place on December 2.
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance recorded a landslide victory in the recent parliamentary elections by winning 230 seats in the 288-member House of Representatives. The BJP won 132 seats in the Assembly, while the NCP of Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar won 57 and 41 seats respectively.
