Minister -President Siddaramaiah held an emergency meeting with senior officers on Tuesday after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir in which a tourist from Karnataka was killed.
Several other tourists were seriously injured in the terror attack.
According to the information so far, a tourist from Karnataka has been shot for his wife and son. The person who died was identified as Manjunath Rao, a broker from the Shivamogga district in Karnataka.
He had traveled to Kashmir with his wife Pallavi, a bank manager, and their 18-year-old son Abhi. Both Pallavi and ABHI are safe and are currently under the care of the authorities. More information is expected about other tourists from Karnataka.
A statement from the Chief Minister's office (CMO) said: “After receiving news that Kannadigas was the target of a terrorist attack in Kashmir, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah immediately held a meeting with high officials to collect information.”
After he was informed by the main secretary and senior police officers, the main minister instructed them to take action quickly.
After his instructions, a team of officials left for Kashmir and his police officers also sent. The resident commissioner in Delhi has been instructed to supervise the necessary follow-up actions, added the CMO statement.
CM Siddaramaiah said: “I strongly condemn the horrible terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Kannadigas are among the victims of this shocking incident.
“After receiving the news, I met an emergency meeting and I assessed the situation with the main secretary and high police officers. I also spoke with the Resident Commissioner in Delhi.
“After my instructions, two teams – consisting of senior officers and another police personnel – were sent to Jammu and Kashmir. An adventure team of the sports department, led by Commissioner Chetan, is also on the road.”
“We keep a close eye on developments. All necessary support will be expanded. Please be insured, the government of Karnataka is firmly with the affected,” he added.
Minister of Rights and Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism, HK Patil, who commented on the incident, stated that he had spoken with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
“We have received provisional information that 12 people from Karnataka were present at the location. We verify the details. We have also received information that one person died in the terrorist attack,” he said.
“We will do everything possible to support them,” he added.
BJP MP from Raghavenendra, who represents the SHIVAMOGGA LOK Sabha district, confirmed that the surviving woman and her son are in a safe location.
