The Nashville Fire Department attempted to save lives Monday during the shooting incident at Covenant School, Covenant Presbyterian Church, authorities said at a news conference Monday.
“Our crews were able to get to the scene to pull out those who had viable signs of life. Those who still showed the possibility of rescue,” said Kendra Loney of the Nashville Fire Department.
Shortly thereafter, a reunification site was set up with “mental health specialists and professionals” for the families and students, Loney added.
On a typical day, there are about 200 students and about 40 to 50 staff members in the school, said Don Aaron of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
It is not clear how many people were in the school on Monday.
“There’s video from the school that we’re looking at right now to try and learn exactly how this all happened,” Aaron said.
Officials said another update on the incident is expected soon. Aaron said they would tweet when the next update is expected.
