French President Emmanuel Macron recorded a video message in English for the Queen, which he described as a “constant presence” and a “fountain of wisdom”.
With the flags of the French and European Union in the background, Macron on behalf of France sent his “most heartfelt” congratulations to the British monarch on her platinum anniversary.
In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, Macron said the Queen is “our friend, our closest ally, our example of service to others.”
“To celebrate you today, celebrate the sincere and deep friendship that unites our two countries and your commitment to serve it,” he said in the statement, which was accompanied by French subtitles.
The Queen, he said, is the “golden thread” that has linked the UK and France during her 70-year reign, in which his country has “relied on very few constants” at the international level.
“Times have changed. Europe has evolved. Our continent is experiencing war again. Throughout these transformations, your commitment to our alliance and friendship has remained, helping to build the trust that brought freedom and prosperity to our continent. “
He continued: “Your first toast to one of my predecessors, René Coty, reminded us that ‘trust and understanding must endure forever’. Your words were matched by a lifelong commitment to our alliance.”
“This year, the 70th of your reign, we celebrate your achievements. We are grateful for your courage and we share the respect and love that the British people and the Commonwealth have always shown you,” he added.
