Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr called on lawmakers in Washington in a fiery speech about today’s school shooting ahead of tonight’s NBA playoff game between the Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks.
An ardent Kerr opened his comments by telling the press at this point that “basketball questions don’t matter”. Kerr patted the table he was sitting at and said, “When are we going to do something?”
Kerr called out “50 senators who refuse to vote on HR-8,” a bill that strengthens firearms background checks, claiming “they won’t vote on it because they want to maintain their own power.”
Calling the senators, including by naming Republican leader Mitch McConnell, Kerr asked, “Are you going to prioritize your own desire for power over our children, the elderly, and churchgoers?”
“50 senators in Washington are going to hold us hostage,” Kerr said.
“It’s pathetic, I’ve had enough,” he added.
Kerr said he was “tired” and told the audience to think of their own relatives and ask, “How would you feel if this happened to you today?”
“We can’t stop talking about this.” said the coach before leaving the room.
