Five people walking on a wide footpath in Mangaluru in Karnataka were hit by a speeding car around 4 pm today. The gruesome collision case left one woman dead and four people seriously injured.
Footage from a surveillance camera around 4pm showed people walking on a wide, less busy footpath near Mannagudda junction in Mangaluru. A white Hyundai Eon driven by Kamalesh Baldev maneuvered recklessly and hit five people – two women and three girls – on the sidewalk, police said.
The car coming from behind first hit four people and then ran over a woman before hitting another woman who tried to run to safety as the car approached her, the footage showed. The suspected driver rams the car and breaks a pole on the sidewalk, dragging the woman for a few feet before hitting the divider.
Within six seconds, the suspect rammed the car into five people, killing one woman and injuring four, including three girls, and then drove away. He parked the car in front of a car showroom and went to his house. The man went to the police station with his father, police said.
Vehicles stopped and people rushed to the scene to help the injured. One person managed to get up but limped after surviving the crash. Two people, who appeared seriously injured, were taken to hospital in a car.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including a case of death due to negligence.
