The source said the archive wants to investigate whether Trump has violated the Presidential Records Act. It is not clear whether the Archives will launch a formal investigation. A vast majority of referrals to the Department of Justice ultimately fail to lead to a formal investigation.
In a statement Wednesday, the Archives said: “We are not commenting on potential or pending investigations.”
The request came after recent revelations that the National Archives had to retrieve 15 boxes of records that had ended up with Trump in Mar-a-Lago and that other documents given to the Archives had been torn up and reassembled.
The Justice Department declined to comment.
