Nadal and Federer, who have won 42 Grand Slam titles together, teamed up one last time on Friday in a doubles for Team Europe against Americans Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe who represented Team World.
Afterwards, photos of the two men – whose rivalries transcended tennis – crying side by side during the post-match ceremony to standing ovations and live music from Ellie Goulding, circulated on social media.
Despite winning two grand slams, Nadal’s season was overshadowed by a foot injury and a more recent abdominal injury that forced him to retire from his Wimbledon semi-final.
He is also expecting his first child with wife Mery Perello soon, Reuters reported.
“As a result, well, I’ve been dealing with all that, which is a different pressure than you’re used to in your professional life. Anyway, luckily everything is fine and we’re much calmer. And in that sense I being able to get here, which was the most important thing to me.”
