The Wankhede Test against New Zealand offered a chance for redemption, but apart from Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, none of the Indian batters managed to take a step further. The biggest disappointment of all was the performance of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both finished the series with less than 100 runs each in the three-match series. At the post-match press conference, Indian captain Rohit had to answer some tough questions, especially about his and Virat's form. Rohit did not hesitate and admitted that seniors not scoring runs is a major concern.
“It's a concern when seniors don't score points. But what's done is done. As a player, as a captain, as a team, we all have to look ahead and see how we can correct what we haven't been able to do.” We have the opportunity to do something special here in Australia. We will focus on that now,” Rohit Sharma said after the Test match in Mumbai.
In yet another example, captain Rohit's ultra-aggressive approach to taking on the bowlers, when a calculated approach was needed in a tough situation, saw him set back and perhaps for the last time on his home field.
Rohit's (11) errant attempt to clear his trademark pull shot from Matt Henry on a delivery that was barely waist high led to his fall.
As soon as Rohit's top edge went up, Henry started celebrating, knowing it was heading towards Glenn Phillips – one of the best fielders – who ran behind from midwicket to take a nice catch.
After a fine 146-ball 90, Gill shouldered his arms on a delivery from Patel (4/43), expecting the ball to spin away, but it straightened and crashed into his stump.
Kohli (1) again marched onto the ground with his bat pointed at his shoulder, perhaps to exude confidence, but he could not reach the pitch of a floating delivery that took the edge of his bat to first slip.
